Before you begin on your journey of building your dream home, let’s face one more truth: you have saved, you have borrowed, and you are finally laying the foundation. Cement, rebar, tiles, paint—these are the big-ticket items you are worried about. What about the pipes inside your walls, or the ones buried beneath your floors? These are probably the last things you have thought about until you face the problem, until you realize the damage has already been done. I have seen this happen to friends of mine. My friend saw the wall of the bathroom break when a pipe burst in his brand new home. My other friend had months of brown, almost mud-colored, water because of a pipe inside the house that had started to rust..

But first things first: what is NS Certified really?

You see those two letters on the pipe: NS. People say it’s marketing. Well, it isn’t. The two letters stand for Nepal Standards. The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) awards this standard. They inspect the factory where the pipes are made. They test the pipes. They ensure that what is being sold is indeed what is being sold.

When you see that the pipe is NS Certified, it means that:

- The government tested it

- It meets minimum standards

- It is safe to use in your home

- Someone is looking after quality

If it is not NS Certified, forget it. The pipes may look the same as the NS Certified ones. But inside the pipe, who knows what is being used. It may work for a year or two and then break, leak, and even contaminate your water.

Dolphin Pipes Carrying the NS Seal

Dolphin has achieved Nepal Quality Certification. It was announced in February 2025. It is a big achievement because their whole process is approved and certified by the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology. So, they know their stuff!

So, which of the Dolphin pipes have this NS seal of approval? Well, after doing some research, I have found that the main products that have this approval are:

CPVC Pipes and Fittings

These are meant for use in water supply systems. They can carry both hot and cold water. Do you have a solar water heating system or a geyser installed at home? There are different types of these pipes:

- SDR 11: Thicker walls to carry high-pressure applications such as offices, hotels, and the like.

- SDR 13.5: thinner than standard, but fits well in residential settings.

- Schedule 40: standard thickness, commonly used in homes.

- Schedule 80: very thick, intended for use in industrial settings where high pressures are required.

UPVC Pipes : These are for cold water service. Think drainage, sewage, and the like.

CPVC Pipes: These are used for both hot and cold water supply, handling high temperatures and pressure, making them ideal for home plumbing and geyser lines.

Borewell Casing Pipes : These are the pipes you use while drilling a borewell. These need to be hard and not break while drilling. Dolphin also offers this type of pipe.

Column Pipes : These are the pipes that connect to the pump and draw water from the borewell.

Underground Pipes : These are for water pipes buried underground. These need to be able to handle the pressure of the earth and the chemicals it contains.

And the fittings?

These include couplers, elbows, tees, and other smaller items. These are also NS certified.

Why Plumbers Trust Dolphin?

Here’s a surprising fact: over 90% of plumbers in Nepal prefer Dolphin pipes. Think about it.

Plumbers are the ones who work with the pipes every day. They know which pipes fit well, which joints work smoothly, and which brands come back with complaints within six months.

A plumber said, “Dolphin is easy to work with and leak-proof.” Another said, “With other brands, we often encounter cracked joints and sudden breakage.”

When the people doing the actual work trust a brand, that tells you something.

What Makes Dolphin Different

Let me break down why people choose Dolphin for their homes.

They handle Nepal's weather: Nepal is not simple. Freezing in the mountains. Humid in the Terai. Hot in the cities. Pipes need to work everywhere.

Dolphin CPVC can handle water up to 93 degrees Celsius. That's boiling. Your geyser or solar heater won't damage it. In cold areas, they don't become brittle and crack.

No rust, no corrosion: Metal pipes rust. It's just what they do. After some years, the rust builds up inside. Water pressure drops. Water turns brown. Then a leak starts somewhere.

Dolphin pipes don't rust. They don't corrode. The inside stays smooth, water flows the same as day one.

Safe water: This matters more than anything. Some cheap pipes use recycled plastic with who-knows-what in it. Over time, chemicals can leak into your water.

Dolphin pipes are lead-free and non-toxic. Hospitals use them. Schools use them. If they're safe enough for sick people and children, they're safe enough for your family.

Long life: These pipes are made to last more than 50 years. Install them once. Forget about them. No breaking walls, no fixing leaks, no replacing pipes every ten years.

Leak-proof joints: The pipes themselves are strong, but joints are where problems usually start. Dolphin uses solvent cement that actually fuses the pipe and fitting together. It becomes one piece. No gap. No drip. No water damage behind your nice tiles.

Earthquake resistant: We live in Nepal. Earthquakes happen. Dolphin pipes have some flexibility, they can move a little without cracking. When the ground shakes, rigid pipes break. Flexible ones survive.

The choice of piping for your home is really dependent on what you need.

For example, for a regular home water supply system, SDR 13.5 or Schedule 40 CPVC would be a good choice. It works well for hot and cold water and is compatible with a solar heater. It also works well for regular water pressure in homes.

For bigger homes or for situations where the water pressure is high, such as in apartment buildings or hotels, SDR 11 or Schedule 80 would be better choices. These are more resistant to pressure because they are thicker.

For drainage and sewage piping, UPVC would be best. It’s cheap, and you won’t have to worry about hot water resistance because you won’t need it for this purpose.

For borewell piping, you should specifically use borewell casing and column pipes because they are made tougher for underground installation.

Where to Find Them

Dolphin products can be found anywhere in Nepal, from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Biratnagar, and all over Nepal. You can easily find Dolphin products in any hardware shop or plumbing shop in Nepal. If you are unable to find it in any shop, you can always ask them to order it for you, or you can contact Dolphin themselves, as they have their factory in Gramthan-2, Morang, and an office in Biratnagar-5.

The fact is, building a house is a big decision, with many decisions to be made and money to be spent, and when it comes to pipes, it’s easy to just buy whatever is available and get out as fast as possible.

The fact is, those pipes will be put into the wall, into the floor, and into the ground, and once they’re in, they’re there for good, with no easy way to fix them once they leak, rust, or break.

Spend a little more money up front and buy the good stuff, buy NS, buy Dolphin, and rest easy knowing that your pipes will last for years to come.

You know who will be drinking from those pipes, and you know who will be bathing in that water. Don't put your kids' health at risk with cheap plastic pipes.

If you are building or renovating, be sure to ask your plumber to use Dolphin CPVC, and look for the NS symbol on the pipe, as this is a symbol of quality, and this is Dolphin’s promise to you.
